My Experience in AmeriCorps NCCC

We’re very excited to have a guest writer in Lauren Martins, as she talks about her time with AmeriCorps so far: AmeriCorps NCCC was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It was senior year in high school and I didn’t have a clue what I was going to do after, until my friend told me about this program called Americorps NCCC. I became interested in it and did more research until I decided this is what I want...

What’s Cooking in Camp

Over the last few years, we’ve had the pleasure of hosting AmeriCorps teams as we’ve been rebuilding in Lake County, CA. This year, we’re pleased to be hosting not one, but two teams across two counties here in Northern California! The teams will be under the supervision of North Coast Opportunities and Hope City. For those unfamiliar with what AmeriCorps is: they’re a way for young people to serve across the country on a number of projects just like ours....

The Blessing of Bill

This year we welcomed on Bill Johnson as Hope City Construction Manager. We have been delighted by he and his wife Wendi, and today we wanted you to get to know them, too. Bill first met Wendi at Bible college, he was new on campus and played basketball, Wendi was a cheerleader. Because of how small she is, Wendi was always on the top of the pyramid. When Bill saw her, he told a friend, “I’m going to marry...

Serving Close to Home

HCRN and Hope City work hard to rebuild in a timely manner for our home owners. To do that, we work with volunteer teams from all over the country and North America. However, sometimes we get teams from much closer to home. That’s the case with this week’s team from the Tri-Valley Group of United Methodist Churches from the East Bay California. They were led by the extremely skillful Steve Elliott who took a short break from building to do...

Thinking Long Term

Of the many ways in which we serve, directly meeting the needs of those suffering is one of the greatest things we as Christians can do. Over the last few months, these articles have focused on how we’ve been meeting immediate needs as the wildfires in Northern California have blazed throughout the summer. Today, we take a look at volunteers who are building homes, and meeting the long term needs of fire survivors. The First United Methodist Church of Santa Rosa...

Peterson’s Commitment to the Community

A solid home is built on a firm foundation. That’s where every home starts, from the bottom up. Before a foundation can even be poured, however, a lot needs to happen. Ground needs to be excavated, dirt needs to be hauled away, forms need to be built to hold the cement, and, finally, a foundation is poured. Thanks to Peterson and their partner Navistar, we now have equipment specifically for this type of work. They proudly presented Hope Crisis Response...

A Brief Update on Redding

We sent out an update on the Mendocino Complex Fire and the Carr Fire on Friday. Today, we want to follow up with some information on what we’ve been doing while these fires have pushed many out of their homes. Our volunteers have been helping out at the emergency shelters, serving meals and helping distribute items as necessary. In addition to serving, we’ve been making deliveries to the shelters across Lake County. Each site has it’s own specific needs, and our...
